Construction jobs include clearing space for a construction site, building new structures, and additions and/or modifications to existing structures. Construction jobs also include maintenance, repair, and improvements on these structures.
Construction jobs are divided into three major segments. Construction jobs of the building segment includes contractors, usually called general contractors, who build residential, industrial, commercial, and other buildings. Those in heavy and civil engineering construction jobs build sewers, roads, highways, bridges, tunnels, and other projects. Specialty trade contractor construction jobs involve specialized activities such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical work.
Construction jobs are usually done or coordinated by general contractors, who specialize in one type of construction such as residential or commercial building. They take full responsibility for the construction job, except for specified portions of the work that might be omitted from the general contract. Although general contractors usually do a portion of the work with their own crews, they often sub-contract out most of the work to heavy construction or specialty trade contractors.
Specialty trade contractors usually do the work of a single trade, such as painting, carpentry, or electrical work, or a combination of closely related trades, such as plumbing and heating. Specialty trade contractors generally have no responsibility for the construction project as a whole. They obtain their work orders from general contractors, architects, property owners, or rental agents.
Construction jobs are heavily dependent upon the economy. Changes in interest rates and credit availabity affect individual and business decisions related to construction projects. Government budgets affect road and school construction and maintenance. Changes in zoning regulations or building codes can result in new construction projects or halting planned ones.
Experienced construction workers, and entry-level applicants with a good work history or military service, will have the best construction job opportunities. Overall, those with specialties requiring specific education, certification, or licensure will face less competition for high-paying construction jobs.
